What’s Next After College Graduation?

Finally, you’re just a few days away from graduation. And you’re all set to apply for a job. But like many fresh graduates-to-be, you’re nervous and scared, because some people told you that it’s a jungle out there.

Then you feel them almost engulfing you- the insecurities and anxieties experienced by a first-time job applicant.

I understand where you’re coming from. I also felt like that. But I do have some tips on how you can overcome those feelings. Because if you don’t overcome them, you just might decide to stay at home for a while after your College graduation. And before you know it, you have spent one whole year at home jobless because you think you’re not yet ready to face the world of working people.

I hope these few tips will help you:

First of all, have a different mindset.

Stop believing that it’s a “jungle out there.” Think of it as opportunity to meet all sorts of people whom you will learn something from. They may not all be the ideal people you wish to meet, but that’s the reality. You have to gain the interest of meeting people from all walks of life. That’s the only way you will grow.

Second, stop comparing yourself from others.

Stop thinking that the other applicant has the edge over you on landing a job because he or she had a better academic performance, or that he or she studied on a more exclusive university. Just focus on yourself, on how you can contribute to the company or institution you wish to apply for.

Third, be friendly.

In my case, when I first applied for a job, I was too shy to even introduce myself to my co-applicant. But then, I realized that starting a conversation with the co-applicant can help lessen my nervousness and the awkwardness of the situation. It will also be beneficial in the long run when you land on the job at last and have to meet all the employees of the company.

Fourth, think of it as your first step towards reaching your goals in life.

When you’re already hired, give your best, be eager to learn new things, expand your horizon and get out of your box. Save some from your salary and don’t stop learning by taking short-term courses or by pursuing a Master’s Degree.

If eventually, you feel the need to search for another job because you have finally realized the career you really wish to pursue, then resign the proper way and still think and speak highly about your first job.

After graduation, that’s the first thing to do- overcome and face your fears.

You can do it. Just don’t give up until you get hired. Push yourself to reach your dreams, one step at a time.
